The director Ken Roht and I decided this energetic opera, based on a comedic Czech novel about a bumbling character caught in the events leading to WWI, should be represented through a blending of circus and military iconography, with several Czech touches – all finished with a layer of distressing, suggesting a well-worn traveling production (perhaps originating from the late 80's).

To accommodate the myriad scene changes, I designed and choreographed over 40 separate "slides" projected onto an aged scrim from a high-powered video projector. The result was a sold out run and a review from the LA Times proclaiming Long Beach Opera "now appears perhaps the artistically healthiest opera outfit in the country."
